There is one more consideration for this change that we want to address here today, and that is the ongoing use of Exchange Server for recipient management for hybrid organizations that have moved all their mailboxes to the cloud. You also know that we never provided this free license type for Exchange Server We want to assure you that we are still committed to delivering a solution that will allow these lingering servers to be removed, but it will not arrive before Exchange Server enters Extended Support.
For this reason, we want to make our recommendation for this scenario clear. Our broad recommendation is to keep Exchange Server in production use until such point as we release a solution that allows those servers to be removed. As explained earlier, Extended Support still provides security and time zone updates and so keeping them in production and ensuring they are properly patched does not increase your risk profile in any way. That way you get full support including non-critical bug fixes and get ongoing product improvements.
When we have a solution available to allow any management-only servers to be removed, it may require an update to Exchange Server , and in that case we may release a future CU or patch. Microsoft encourages Exchange Server customers to adopt CU20 as soon as possible to ensure uninterrupted delivery of any future security related fixes. After March 16, , only CU20 or its successors will receive updates. Additional lifecycle information for all Microsoft products is available on docs. Microsoft becomes an extension of your on-premises organization. If your organization chooses to migrate mailboxes to Microsoft but plans to keep DirSync or Azure AD Connect in place to continue managing user accounts from on-premises Active Directory, you need to keep at least one Exchange server on-premises.
If all Exchange servers are removed, you won't be able to make changes to Exchange recipients in Exchange Online. This is because the source of authority remains in your on-premises Active Directory and changes need to be made there. We strongly believe that you get the best value and user experience by migrating fully to Microsoft But we understand that some organizations need to keep some Exchange Servers on-premises.
This might be because of regulatory requirements, to guarantee data isn't stored in a foreign datacenter, because you have unique settings or requirements that can't be met in the cloud, or because you need Exchange to manage cloud mailboxes because you still use Active Directory on-premises. In any case, if you keep Exchange on-premises, you should ensure your Exchange environment is upgraded to at least Exchange or Exchange For the best experience, we recommend that you upgrade your remaining on-premises environment to Exchange You don't need to install Exchange Server if you want to go straight from Exchange Server to Exchange Server Exchange includes all the features of previous releases of Exchange.
